Global Politics and Law for and against Extraction

In this course, we are going to explore issues of violence and justice by reading three current books that deal with questions around extraction from different angles. In particular, we are going to engage with the interplay between politics and law in both enabling and resisting extraction. We start with Lara Montesinos Coleman’s “Struggles for the Human: Violent Legality and the Politics of Rights”, followed by Thea Riofrancos’ “Extraction: The Frontiers of Green Capitalism” and Christine Schwöbel-Patel’s forthcoming “Green Frontiers: The Laws of Extraction in the Green Transition”. Through these books, we may identify intersecting harms (including their gendered dimensions) and modes of struggle, colonial continuities and transformative potentials. Next to in-depth discussions about the texts, we will also practice text formats, such as book reviews, and explore other options to engage with the writings (e.g. through podcasts, discussions, etc.)
